Building businesses that actually work
We started marquelion in 2019 because too many consultants were selling dreams instead of helping companies build solid foundations. Five years later, we're still here doing the unglamorous work that makes the difference.
Started with a spreadsheet and a lot of questions
Our founder, Lachlan Thorburn, spent eight years watching businesses chase growth while ignoring the basics. Cash flow models that didn't add up. Revenue projections based on optimism rather than data. Strategic plans that looked impressive in PowerPoint but fell apart in practice.
So he left his corporate role and started working with small businesses in Canberra. The goal wasn't to revolutionise anything. It was simply to help owners understand their numbers well enough to make better choices.
What began as solo consulting work grew into marquelion when other businesses started asking the same questions. Now we work with companies across Australia, but the approach hasn't changed much. We still believe good business models beat clever marketing every time.

How we actually help businesses
Most consultants show up with frameworks and templates. We start by asking what's keeping you up at night. Then we dig into your specific situation until we understand what's really going on.
Financial modelling that makes sense
We build models you can actually use. Not 50-page documents that sit in a drawer. Simple spreadsheets that show what happens when you change pricing, add staff, or invest in new equipment. The kind of tool you open every month because it helps you make decisions.
Revenue strategies grounded in reality
Growing revenue sounds great until you realise it's costing more than you're making. We help you figure out which customers are actually profitable, what services you should stop offering, and where to focus your limited time and energy. Sometimes the best growth strategy is saying no to the wrong opportunities.
Operational structure that scales
Your current setup might work fine at your current size. But add 30% more clients and everything breaks. We help you spot those breaking points before you hit them, and build processes that can handle growth without requiring you to work 80-hour weeks.
Market positioning you can defend
Being everything to everyone is exhausting and expensive. We help you figure out what you're genuinely good at and who values that enough to pay properly for it. Then we help you communicate that clearly so the right people find you and the wrong ones don't waste your time.

Led by someone who's done the work
Lachlan Thorburn founded marquelion after spending nearly a decade in corporate strategy roles where he watched good ideas die from poor execution. He got tired of creating presentations that never led to real change.
Before marquelion, he worked with mid-sized companies trying to scale without falling apart. He saw patterns emerge. The same problems kept showing up regardless of industry. Cash flow mismanagement. Unclear pricing strategies. Growth plans disconnected from operational capacity.
These days he splits time between direct client work and training the marquelion team. He still builds financial models himself because he thinks it's important to stay close to the actual work. And he insists everyone on the team spend time with clients rather than hiding behind theoretical frameworks.
Outside work, he's usually hiking somewhere in the Brindabellas or reading dense books about economic history that nobody else wants to discuss.

Honest about limitations
We turn down work that's outside our expertise. Better to refer you to someone who can actually help than take your money and deliver mediocre results.
Focused on implementation
Strategy documents are worthless if they sit unused. We stick around to help you actually put ideas into practice and adjust when reality doesn't match the plan.
Committed to clarity
Business is complicated enough without consultants adding jargon. We explain things in plain language and make sure you understand the reasoning behind every recommendation.
